David played for Princeton University under coach Pete Carril, from 1977 to 1981, and David was the captain of his team. He has participated in the Maccabiah Games on behalf of the USA national team, and in the game, they won the gold medal. Then David started to play as a professional basketball player for Israel’s Super League for the next 12 years. But later, he got injured because he couldn’t continue his career as a basketball player, so he started to serve as a full-time coach. 

The Professional path of David Blatt as a coach

David joined Maccabu Tel Aviv as an assistant manager for the Pini Gershon from 1999 to 2004 season. In 2004, he left the Pini Gershon and joined as a head coach for the Dynamo Saint Petersburg. Then from 2005 to 06, season David signed as a head coach for the Israeli national tea, and later he left the Israel team and joined as a head coach for the Benetton Treviso team. David was appointed as a head coach for the Istanbul-based Turkish Super League team, Efes Pilsen. Then on June 20, 2014, David was appointed head coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers. 

On June 1, 2016, he was appointed as the new head coach for Darussafaka. On June 27, 2018, David signed as a head coach for two years contract for Olympiacos Greek Basket League. On December 18, 2019, David announced his retirement as a coach after the New York Knicks team hired him as a consultant. But after the 2019 to 20 seasons, his contract did not renew. On May 28, 2020, a 50% percent share of the Israeli Company True Player group was owned by David Family.
